Another Cancellation; Exec Producer Moving On
• KTEH, of San Jose, will not be renewing
EastEnders in 2010 due to low ratings, according
to an executive at KQED, of San Francisco,
which oversees KTEH’s operations. The
impending cancellation would leave 10 public
TV stations broadcasting the series in the U.S.
• EastEnders executive producer Diederick
Santer announced he plans to move on after
the show’s 25th anniversary next February.
Santer has been in the position since October
2006, and will be replaced by Bryan Kirk
wood, who has been a producer on the British
soap Hollyoaks. Prior to that, Kirkwood spent
10 years working on Coronation Street as a
storyliner.
Santer will continue to work for the BBC
Drama Production as an executive producer
with a special responsibility for developing
new shows that can be internationally co-pro
duced. The aim will be for him to develop dramas
that can be made through BBC Drama
Production in conjunction with BBC World
Wide Los Angeles.
• EastEnders: E20 is a new online spin-off
show, which starts in January 2010 and will
introduce a group of sixth form students expe
riencing the highs and lows of teenage life. It’s
part of the EastEnders 25th anniversary cele
brations.
• The YouTube BBC/EastEnders channel also
promises for the anniversary on Feb. 19, 2010,
uploads throughout December some classic
Christmas and New Year’s clips.
