Soap Documentary Starring N.Y. Fans
Viewed By 9 Million
LONDON, ENGLAND - Soap Secrets, September Films' hour-long documentary
that featured EastEnders fans in the Tri-State area, garnered 9 million
ITV viewers and nearly 50 percent of everyone who was watching telly in
the U.K. at 8 p.m. on May 12.
The ratings were among the highest that the production company ever
received, according to the programme's director David Cumming. Soap
Secrets was narrated by Gillian Taylforth ("Kathy") and gave an up-close
look at the Walford Gazette.
The press reviews were generally positive: "The real stars are the New
York EastEnders fan club," wrote the Daily Telegraph. The Express chimed
in: "Secrets? Well you can find out why a bunch of New Yorkers are
obsessed with EastEnders." The Sunday Times was less kind: "a
sad-looking band of EastEnders fans gather to practice "Rick-aaay."
Night & Day magazine cited "a deranged U.S. fan who admits, 'I thought
it was a drama about real English people.'"
