Dear Walford Gazette: (Letters to the Editor)
Wendy Will Be Missed
Hi Larry,
Thank you and all the U.S fans for me, please. And yes, contact
mewhen you get to London next.
cheers,
John Burns via e-mail

Hello Larry,
I was watching the BBC
World News and heard about Wendy Richard. She has been a part of my
television family for so long First as Miss Brahms and then as Pauline
Fowler. She will be missed. Here to a wonderful lady!

You may have heard about this already. Wendy just passed away.
So tragic!

Larry,
Thanks so much for inviting WG subscribers to send you cards to be
forwarded to Wendy Richard. You obviously forwarded mine promptly
because today I received a lovely picture from her that indicates she
is an MBE now, and a handwritten note.
I hope many others took up your offer, as Wendy is a STAR who is
certainly appreciative of her fans’ support!

Hi Larry,
I hope Wendy responds well to the latest treatments. Here’s payment
for a two-year subscription to the Walford Gazette.
I’ve enclosed a little extra to help defray the cost of the
increased postal fees you incurred over the last few months. Hope it
helps.
Thanks for all you do on behalf of us EastEnders fans. Just
letting you know it is much appreciated.
Very truly yours,

Gazette’s Influence?
Guess What Larry,
After my interview with you, (WG, Issue #64) and the interview your
friend from The Mirror, then his friend from the Sunday Mirror, there
is suddenly, without any warning, or publicity an episode of
EastEnders with an all-black cast (see page 3).
The episode had strong references to the racism, riots and civil
unrest as result of the stuggle and suffering black people have gone
through, with a strong underlining message that ‘things are changing
but, we know racism is still there’ in much more subtle forms.
Coincidence or luck? I believe in neither. Well...unless you
define luck as Labour Under Correct Knowledge. I can’t help thinking
we had something to do with that. Instead of a leak from the Programme
to the Paper, it was the Paper to the Programme. Food for thought?
Sylvester Williams
Essex, London
(Mr Williams formerly played Mick in EastEnders, and is the
writer/director/producer of Jingle Bells Jingle Blues, a feature film
featuring an all-black cast.)
Brit DVD Player Update
Hi Larry.
Just to keep you up-to-date,
I finally bought a region-free DVD player, a Pioneer DV-410V-K.
So far, no problems, except I need to get a 10-year-old kid in
here to help me coordinate everything. Thanks very much for all your
help and for spurring me on to get it.
I found it online through Bombay Electronics, of Chicago. It was
listed at $129, but I think the actual charge was less than that —
maybe $118, but I could be wrong. I did it as a phone order and the
guy I spoke with was very helpful. I didn’t even ask him to lower the
price; he did that automatically.
Now I may have to get a VCR player to replace my ancient one but
they seem to be rather expensive for something that is being phased
out. But I have some tapes that I would like to play like the whole
set of The Jewel in the Crown that I found in a junk shop for $8.
That $8 bargain will wind up costing me a lot of money.
You could make a database on the different players that your
readers get and what they paid for them, and then do an article on
that. Maybe you doing that already? There is a need for that.
Thanks again for your help, Larry — and for the Gazette.
Very sad about Wendy Richard. I almost feel that she is someone
I actually knew. I loved the team of Pauline and Arthur.
Thanks again,
Barbara via e-mail
EE Anniversary Time
Hi Everyone!
Twenty-three years ago
today, 02/19/85, the BBC aired the first-ever episode of our beloved
show. Cheers!
It was great meeting you at our last Orange County club meet-up,
Larry. We’re not all THAT crazy, are we?
Best,

OC Club Visit Kudos
I certainly enjoyed your talk, and especially regarding the personal
contacts [with the EE actors] you’ve had. I’ll sit closer next time. I
missed a lot of words.
Did I understand you to say your kids don’t know why you put
yourself through misery to stay up to 1 a.m. to view EE?
I’d be happy to contribute towards a TiVo for you if $$ are
keeping you back.
Loved your visit,

Internet Newbie Did Fine
Hi
Being an old dinosaur, I
wanted to just double check, as I’ve used PayPal and paid for a
two-year subscription to your most wonderful newspaper.
I’ve just received my notice that issue (vol 16, issue 4, no. 64)
is my last issue and it’s time to renew so I assume the new
subscription will continue from there.
Anyway, my info follows and thank you so much for all of your
hard work. I especially remember you calling all of us when EE was in
dire straits and you collected the renewal money to show LIW our
commitment (thank goodness they continue to show us their commitment).
Anyway, thanks so much,

Keep ’Em Comin’
Hi Larry,
We have moved and my WG
just caught up with me. Between the hurricane (Ike) and the move, the
mail is running a little slow.
Don’t want to miss out on any of the goings on. It’s so nice to
keep up with the square’s “real” lives.
I subscribed to Dish Network after BBC America dropped EE. We
have to have satellite (not cable) in our new home, so this move
worked out fine. I just hate missing even one episode.
Thanks,

WLIW Tribulations
Hi Larry,
Well, we still have our
friends at Walford each week — but for how long?
And why did WLIW change the day to Friday and hour to midnight?
Can’t figure them out.
But many thanks to you for helpoing to keep EE going.
Cheers!

Alfie’s A Keeper
Hi Larry,
Enclosed is my check for a one-year renewal. I almost quit you because
my fun money has greatly diminished. But I’ve been with the Gazette
from the beginning and I just couldn’t do it.
Besides, here in Central New York State, Alfie Moon should be
sauntering onto our screens this coming week, and I just know that the
Walford Gazette will have a few features and pics of my all-time
favourite male EastEnders character! American viewers who didn’t catch
him on BBCA before they pulled the plug on EE are certainly in for a
treat.
And I will enjoy again some of the best EE episodes ever!
Thanks for all your hard work!

Thank you for the excellent Gazette! I always enjoy reading it!

WLIW Saga Goes On
Larry,
What’s going on with WLIW? Our slumber party marathons are all but
gone, and we’re often preempted.
Is it possible to get them to name a price for us to meet an
annual guarantee?
We’ve done it before and could do it again with your fundraising ability.
Marcia Sirni
New York, NY
Editor’s reply: You raise some good points, but I’m not the best
person to answer because I’m apparently persona non grata with WLIW
these days. So you’re better off asking them that question directly.
But generally I think all fans who watch via public TV should support
their local host stations.
Nebraska Checks In
Hello Folks,
Greetings fellow EastEnder-ites from the plains of Nebraska. We watch
EE on pay per view through Dish Network. It’s a fun way to spend two
hours on Sunday nights.
We’re looking forward to the new books from the Walford Gazette.
